And now to my gems of discovery!!!
1. Nirapara Rasam Powder
I was ill and so wanted to have a nice bowl of hot rasam. I was looking up recipes and all involved doing some activity with the dal – boiling it, grinding it, etc. Thats when I chanced upon this rasam powder at an Indian grocery store. Nirapara is a mallu brand and the recipe listed on its backside did not involve any activity with the dal. I guess the dal is already incorporated in the masala. So, rasam making becomes super-easy! The only hitch in using this masala is if you add too many spoonfuls of it, there is this spice in it whose smell and taste is very over-powering and that gets to one. So, just don’t be liberal with it. Else, it works completely fine!
2. Aachi Fish Curry Masala
Again, the story starts very predictably. I felt like having fish curry and was looking up recipes and they all involved frying the fish and then incorporating it into a curry. This was also another masala that I chanced upon at the Indian grocery store. Aachi is a tamil brand and the recipe listed on its backside just spoke about adding cleaned and washed fish into the curry. Another super-easy way to prepare fish curry!
3. Shan Masalas
Shan Masalas are Pakistan’s gems to the world. Shaan is a Pakistani brand and the manner in which it simplifies non vegetarian cooking is a gift to Indians in the United States who love meat.
For a girl whose experience in cooking is terribly amateur, cooking chicken biryani is a very big deal. That’s where Shaan Bombay Biryani Masala comes in. This masala comes pre-packaged with all the spices – from salt to cardamom. There is no spice that you can get wrong with it. One’s biryani can never be too spicy or low on salt. The taste is always bang on. Only a man/woman completely off his/her bonkers can get this one wrong!
Another tried and tested masala is the Shan spice mix for fish seasoning. Again this masala comes pre-packaged with all the spices. Simply marinate your fish using this masala, fry them and then be simply treated to some yummy food!!!
Hmmm… so after reading all this, some may call me a lazy bum!!!! You may feel “So much for her cooking!! She could have put up images of her dishes!” In my defense, I am merely a prudent and judicious user of time ! And about the dishes – “People!!! Pls don’t tell me you have not seen how a chicken biryani or fish fry looks like! Mine are no different too!”
So, if I were to enumerate the lessons I’ve learnt in cooking, I would just mention 2 things – “In the kitchen, stick to what one does best” and “It’s all about the salt and spice”. Somehow, these 2 lessons seem to be applicable to life too.
How do you measure the life you have lived, the time you have spent on this earth living and breathing? Is it by the amount of money you have, the lands and homes you own, the work you have done, the friends you have, the children you have or simply age?!!!
I choose to measure my life by the movies I watched, the books I read and the places I visited. Weird!!! Well, I have always been different (which is a very nice way of saying “weird”). I have heard somewhere that there will always be a price that one has to be pay for being different and so when one makes the bold choice of walking on less-trodden paths, one must always be willing to pay a price. The exact nature of the price one pays, I guess, solely depends on one’s luck!!! So far, I may just have been lucky (touchwood!!!) or maybe I am just not that “different” at all !!!!
Its been long since I’ve hit this blog… A lot of water has flown under the bridge…. And what better way to measure the water flown ever since I last hit this blog by the movies watched, books read and places seen!!!
Movies
There were a lot of movies. Bharatmovies.com has been a real “boredom-saver”. Thanks to Malayalam Cinema (and the fact that I understand Malayalam – for that I have to credit my parents) for all the wonderful movies that are still being made (though not at the same rate at which they were made!!!). Thanks to Pokkiri Raja, Indian Rupee, Snehaveedu, Cocktail, Traffic, Chaapa Kurishu (the fact that my mom had a small role to play in it was an added incentive for me to watch it), Paleri Manikyam, Adaminde Makan Abu, Gaddhama, Salt and Pepper and other innumerable movies which entertained me and moved me.
I have always been bad at criticizing movies – how can one criticize something which so many people have endeavored to make and just push all that effort away with a wag of a tongue? I always choose to find something nice in a movie. Thats why I loved Saawariya and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna when most others loathed them. And so, when I say that a movie is bad, then it really is un-watchable!
Of course, I did have time for Bollywood too – Don 2, Players, Turning 30, Provoked – but nothing that “made my day’!!!!But, I followed up on a lot of Bollywood gossip – so if anyone will have me – I think I am ready to have my own talk show on Bollywood – I have ample “research” material on most cine-personalities. And there are always the old episodes of emotional atyachar, love lock-up, roadies, splitsvilla, rakhi ka insaaf and rahul dulhaniya le jayega on youtube for time-pass evenings. Mindless entertainment has always made me feel better. I realize through them that there are others out there who have bigger problems in life than me. Somehow, the baser side in me always takes comfort in that knowledge.
Kollywood – Except for 7am Arivu and velayutham – really nothing much.
Amongst the movies I watched at the theaters overs the past 2 months, I loved The Dirty Picture vWww Discoveraboutlove G Trt %C3%A7ocuk Gece Bah%C3%A7esi Izle Discover About Love Personals Szh Main Newsletters Action Archives Discover About Love The Meandering Riverf s s Discover About Love Discover About Love Cache:RjlJl6liTpUJ:m.discoveraboutlove.com/en/in-a-Diego-High+%E0%B8%9B%E0%B8%8F%E0%B8%B4%E0%B8%97%E0%B8%B4%E0%B8%99%E0%B8%84%E0%B8%B2%E0%B8%97%E0%B8%AD%E0%B8%A5%E0%B8%B4%E0%B8%81+2012 xWww Discoveraboutlove G Trt %C3%A7ocuk Gece Bah%C3%A7esi Izle Discover About Love Personals Szh Main Newsletters Action Archives Discover About Love The Meandering Riverq z Redtubegirl Discover About Love Personals Tohoshinki.video.clip.collection.-the.one-%5D.mv.(dvdiso).iso
