So, if I were to enumerate the lessons I’ve learnt in cooking, I would just mention 2 things – “In the kitchen, stick to what one does best” and “It’s all about the salt and spice”. Somehow, these 2 lessons seem to be applicable to life too.

Measure of One’s Life!!!!

How do you measure the life you have lived, the time you have spent on this earth living and breathing? Is it by the amount of money you have, the lands and homes you own, the work you have done, the friends you have, the children you have or simply age?!!!

I choose to measure my life by the movies I watched, the books I read and the places I visited. Weird!!! Well, I have always been different (which is a very nice way of saying “weird”). I have heard somewhere that there will always be a price that one has to be pay for being different and so when one makes the bold choice of walking on less-trodden paths, one must always be willing to pay a price. The exact nature of the price one pays, I guess, solely depends on one’s luck!!! So far, I may just have been lucky (touchwood!!!) or maybe I am just not that “different” at all !!!!

Its been long since I’ve hit this blog… A lot of water has flown under the bridge…. And what better way to measure the water flown ever since I last hit this blog by the movies watched, books read and places seen!!!

Movies

There were a lot of movies. Bharatmovies.com has been a real “boredom-saver”. Thanks to Malayalam Cinema (and the fact that I understand Malayalam – for that I have to credit my parents) for all the wonderful movies that are still being made (though not at the same rate at which they were made!!!). Thanks to Pokkiri Raja, Indian Rupee, Snehaveedu, Cocktail, Traffic, Chaapa Kurishu (the fact that my mom had a small role to play in it was an added incentive for me to watch it), Paleri Manikyam, Adaminde Makan Abu, Gaddhama, Salt and Pepper and other innumerable movies which entertained me and moved me.

I have always been bad at criticizing movies – how can one criticize something which so many people have endeavored to make and just push all that effort away with a wag of a tongue? I always choose to find something nice in a movie. Thats why I loved Saawariya and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna when most others loathed them. And so, when I say that a movie is bad, then it really is un-watchable!

Of course, I did have time for Bollywood too – Don 2, Players, Turning 30, Provoked – but nothing that “made my day’!!!!But, I followed up on a lot of Bollywood gossip – so if anyone will have me – I think I am ready to have my own talk show on Bollywood – I have ample “research” material on most cine-personalities. And there are always the old episodes of emotional atyachar, love lock-up, roadies, splitsvilla, rakhi ka insaaf and rahul dulhaniya le jayega on youtube for time-pass evenings. Mindless entertainment has always made me feel better. I realize through them that there are others out there who have bigger problems in life than me. Somehow, the baser side in me always takes comfort in that knowledge.

Kollywood – Except for 7am Arivu and velayutham – really nothing much.

Amongst the movies I watched at the theaters overs the past 2 months, I loved The Dirty Picture. The movie was all about Vidya Balan. I love her – simply because I think she is one gutsy girl. She does not have a perfect body but she chose to flaunt it for a movie in an industry where “it is all about the body” and it all somehow came out alright!!! She dresses in kancheevaram sarees every time she steps out, looks like an “auntyji” most of the times (at the most a-late-twenty-early-thirty kinda lady!!!) – I have never seen her dressed in a jean and a casual tee for any occasion – she is all about the imperfection in a jungle where even perfection struggles to succeed and yet, mostly fails! She has only 1 thing to offer – talent – and that somehow works! Inspiring and lucky! Maybe the real reason I find her so inspiring could also simply be because even I have a body which is nowhere near perfection.

At this point, I remember only 4 other movies I watched and hence – worth mentioning.A.)Sherlock Holmes: A game of shadows – the movie started off as a drag but somewhere it picked up pace. There were some really nice action visuals – hmmm… overall o k! B.) The girl with the dragon tattoo – Simply awesome! Brilliant! It was like reading a mystery thriller. But I could not get myself to read the entire series – too much gore in there – methinks! C.) The adventures of Tintin - Superd 3D and the plot was exciting too! D.) Haywire - Nice action by the lead but wished that the pace was faster!

Books

Discovered a new author – Harlan Coben. You can’t compare him to Lee Child or Michael Connelly (my favs), but at least I keep going back to his books. I am still reading his books – just a few more are left to read. I feel that I have already read the best he has to offer. Now, to discover another new author who interests me!!!

Travel

Visited New York and from there, travelled to Atlantic City. The idea was to spend time with friends – both mine and my partner’s. Being able to spend time with friends is a very rare luxury for me! I do not know if I have lost the capacity to make new friends. I have not thought much about that. Maybe for a bad reason, that is not a path down which I want to go. But hopefully, there are friends out there whom I have not yet met!!! That is a nice thought! On this trip, I also experienced the highs and lows of gambling. It is as real as they talk about in books and movies. Gambling is not for me. I knew that my destiny is not such where I earn good on a stroke of luck and not effort! Unfortunately, I was proved right!

Also visited the Snoqualmie Falls and Mt. Rainier National Park (the latter in the midst of a snow storm). Seattle is a very beautiful place. Maybe the high cost-of-living is justified. Maybe, the cost of living is directly proportionate to the scenic beauty that a place offers. Maybe that is why Kerala and Goa are more expensive! After traveling in the midst of a snow storm, we were trapped at home in another snow storm. Snow and ice can completely transform our worlds – it brings a pure and mystique quality to our mundane surroundings – but the pre-requisite to enjoy snow and ice is that one has to have the choice of being indoors beside a warm fireplace, with ample food stocked up and a nice person to give one company! Otherwise, its the worst place to be out in!

Meanwhile

Meanwhile time goes on – ticking each second away. Most people say that Life is too short! It passes by in a whir! I don’t think so. I think Life is too Long! It feels like I have been around for a very long time! I have very graphic memories of my past! And so, since my last blog, my employer (now previous!) discontinued my work-from-home option, I quit my job, I am searching for new jobs, I talk to many recruiters, I have taken up a new HR certification (not yet started preparing for it, though!!!) and I have read 30 out of the 100 pages of the driver manual to be mugged up to clear my driving license test. But these, my friends, are merely incidental!!!!

Ra One and G One

Watched Ra One over the weekend. Well, what can I say – it was stupid – watched it with zilch expectations – but I enjoyed it. I commented royally on most of the scenes and corny dialogues, clapped and tried to whistle when Rajnikant came on screen and basically never kept my mouth shut throughout the movie. The movie had some really stupid and mindless stuff – SRK (Shah Rukh Khan) eating noodles with curd – Kareena’s version of “konjum konjum” – SRK trying to speak Hindi in Tamil style – and a story which was mind-boggling – meaning there was no head or tail to it!
