When “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” [(1) right] film announcement trailer was released December 20, 2011, like many of you I was mesmerized by the Dwarfs singing [(2) below] the hymn like Misty Mountain Cold song–especially with the voice of Thorin Oakenshield as portrayed by Richard Armitage (far left in image below). Mr. Armitage’s velvety baritone vocal timber exemplified a capella singing at its finest–although some instrumental music comes in faintly in the background later. I listened to this soothing reverent music again and again. Fess up, you did, too. Ha!
And, of course, the lush imagery of the video clips struck a nerve regarding the grand scope and depth of detail of this monumental movie undertaking. Whether the images were real or CGI–who cares? They drew me in–as they did a lot of people. We are hooked and we can’t wait until the film is released December 14, 2012–some 301 days from now, according to the “Countdown to the U.S. premiere of The Hobbit film..” countdown clock that I have linked in my sidebar and linked here as well counters/customcounter.html?msg=The+Hobbit+US+Premiere&month=12&day=14&year=2012&hour=5&min=00&sec=00&p0=64 Hang in there everyone. We’re soon to be under only 300 days to wait for the film. Ha!
And happily, we have been treated to a couple of wonderful reinterpretations of the Dwarf song since the release of the movie announcement trailer. So for your enjoyment, I link in order of release: A) the initial “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” movie trailer video; B) Bccmee’s music video of the Dwarf song imagery; C) DarkJackal’s music video of the Dwarf song imagery animated; and a music video of the Dwarf song music playing against a backdrop of a musical score of the melody, for those of you who want to plunk it out on your piano. Ha! Each video has its own merits and I include them here for you to enjoy again. The B and C videos are also linked over in my Hobbit Resources links in the side bar to the right.
A) “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” film announcement trailer [(3) below] released December 20, 2011 is now available to view on the official movie web site www.thehobbit.com
C) And more recently, DarkJackal has created a delightful animated version of the imagery in the Dwarf Song titled “LOTRO: ‘Far Over the Misty Mountains’ Music Video”[(5) below] that was first released on January 28, 2012 on her Heirs of Durin blog via her post linked at 2012/01/28/misty-mountains-music-video/
D) For the music instrumentalist, here is a melody music score video version [(6) below] of the Dwarf song “Over the Misty Mountains Cold – melody – The Hobbit”, a video by DieRacheDerNatur
Finally, for the Tolkien purists out there, here is an excerpt from “The Hobbit” text with the full “Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold” song/poem lyrics [(7) below]–with a lovely mountains graphic from Mulinbinba’s blog [(8) below right). Though the abbreviated musical and poetical arrangement of the Dwarf song in “The Hobbit” movie trailer contained the essence of the Dwarf song in the short time span of the movie trailer, it is also helpful to read the full storytelling version of the poem:
Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere break of day
To seek the pale enchanted gold.
The dwarves of yore made mighty spells,
While hammers fell like ringing bells
In places deep, where dark things sleep,
In hollow halls beneath the fells.
For ancient king and elvish lord
There many a gleaming golden hoard
They shaped and wrought, and light they caught
To hide in gems on hilt of sword.
On silver necklaces they strung
The flowering stars, on crows they hung
The dragon-fire, in twisted wire
They meshed the light of moon and sun.
Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day,
To claim our long-forgotten gold.
Goblets the carved there for themselves
And harps of gold; where no man delves
There lay they long, and many a song
Was sung unheard by men or elves.
The pines were roaring on the height,
The winds were moaning in the night.
The fire was red, it flaming spread;
The trees like torches blazed with light.
The bells were ringing in the dale
And men looked up with faces pale;
Then dragon’s ire more fierce than fire
Laid low their towers and houses frail.
The mountain smoked beneath the moon;
The dwarves, they heard the tramp of doom.
They fled their hall to dying fall
Beneath his feet, beneath the moon.
Far over the misty mountains grim
To dungeons deep and caverns dim
We must away, ere break of day,
To win our harps and gold from him!
(Reprise)
Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day,
To find our long-forgotten gold.
